Startum Star wins on the last stride to win the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (G1) 1800m at Ascot in Perth.

Champion Ballarat trainer Darren Weir won his first Perth Group 1 on celebrated stallion Startum Star. Stating after the race the horse was set for this, was a clearly a deliberate plan to target WA’s most prestigious races.
Controversy does surround the race, with Hong Kong based jockey Douglas Whyte, charged with failing to ride his mount, Scales Of Justice, out to the line. Scale of Justice looked home at the 100 metre mark; however it did look like Whyte may have misjudged the line, which led Startum Star to grab the line at the last stride.
As for Stratum Star, “There are all sorts of options awaiting him. Sydney, Brisbane and I even heard someone talking of retirement, and when you think about it he’s a dual group 1 winner with a beautiful pedigree,” Weir said.
